Lisa Bellear, a Minjungbul / Goernpil / Noonuccal / Kanak woman from Stradbroke Island, was well known within the Australian Indigenous community. Primarily based in Melbourne, Lisa pursued varied interests as an Indigenous activist, broadcaster, poet, feminist, academic and performer. Curated by close friends, artists Destiny Deacon and Virginia Fraser and cousin Kim Kruger, this exhibition showcases a selection from Bellear’s photographic collection from the Koorie Heritage Trust, through which she documented over a quarter of a century of Indigenous community life including protest marches, community celebrations, portraits, signs and graffiti, and personal photographs.

The exhibition is also made possible through the generous support of the Norma Gleeson Bequest, which provided seed funds enabling the rehousing, cataloguing and registration of the Lisa Bellear Photographic Collection.  This preliminary work on the collection facilitated development of the exhibition. The bequest, set up to honour the memory of Norma Gleeson, an active friend and supporter of the Trust and the Koorie community over many years, provides annual financial collections based project support to the Trust.
