COMMUNITY WORKSHOP – WEAVING WITH AUNTY CLAIR BATES

Clair Bates, Woven Mat, 2017

Spend the day learning how to weave mats with Aunty Clair Bates of the Malingappa, Paakantyi people of the Darling River.

Aunty Clair’s artwork was influenced and inspired by her childhood spent growing up in the bush and listening to stories about her grandmother, “As a young girl, my grandmother was taught to stitch skin rugs with threads of animal sinew, and make dilly-bags from woven grass”. Over the years the desire to learn and practice Aunty Claire’s Aboriginal culture has led her into the field of jewellery making and Aboriginal art.
